Piezomagnetic sensors work on the principle that the permeability of magnetic materials changes under mechanical force. The sensor is made of a single block of stainless steel with four holes punched into the stainless steel body. Through these four holes are wound two sets of coils, which are at an angle to each other. When an alternating current is applied in the primary coil, a magnetic field is generated in the primary coil. Because the primary and secondary coils are at an angle to each other, no magnetic field is generated in the secondary coil as long as there is no load on the sensor. When mechanical force is applied to the measurement direction of the sensor, the direction of propagation of the magnetic field in the primary coil changes, incorporating the secondary coil into the magnetic field. Since the magnetic field in the secondary coil changes, an induced potential is generated in this coil.
